How to play look at me on recorder

By Kate Bright, recorder enthusiast. The very first time I picked up a recorder, I fell deeply in love with this sweet instrument. I grew up as a clarinetist, but developed jaw problems and had to quit woodwinds forever — or so I thought. Then, I began my Orff Schulwerk journey and found the recorder, and the rest is history. I found that the recorder was a tool of great pedagogical power, a tool that could teach my students how to improvise, read, and compose a melody.

This book shows the name of the notes on each individual note, which helps one to memorize them. That book shows the picture of the recorder from the top to the bottom, and this book shows the picture of the recorder from bottom to top. Each book contains different songs from the other which is nice , and each book contains songs with only the notes that have been learned up to that point which again, is great.

Both books also contain lyrics, where appropriate, which are nice for those who want to do duets, trios, etc. That book also gives a 1 page illustration and descriptions of the entire family of recorders, which this book does not offer. This book does also come with a CD that properly demonstrates how all of the songs in the book should be played, which is a wonderful bonus for those who plan to play the recorder as more than a hobby.

Overall I am happy that I decided to purchase both books together. It seems that what one book leaves out, the other one includes - which is why I recommend purchasing both books together. My year-old grandson had a cheap soprano recorder that he was given for a music introduction class a couple of years ago. He no longer uses it, so I thought that I would learn to play it. I do a lot of camping and I love the sound of the flute when I'm in a forested area.

The latter has an online website so that I can hear what the melodies are supposed to sound like. I haven't used it yet - but I will, and I'll post a review. With "Recorder Fun," I already knew the tunes. Within a day I was playing "Mary Had A Little Lamb," which believe it or not consists of six notes and quite a bit of fingering. Now I'm 66 years old. I've never played an instrument. I go at my own pace, practice more difficult notes a little longer and zoom past less difficult ones.

I have a little bit of arthritis in my thumbs and carpal tunnel in my wrists. So, the difficulty for me is mostly about positioning my fingers regardless of the rigidity that has set in. Of course, when I feel a little pain from all of the flexing, it helps that I'm motivated to learn.

Hope you have as much fun as I am learning to make music!! But needs improvement. I'm a senior citizen who never read music or played an instrument and this book is very good. In particular, it gives you the ability to log on to an accompanying site to hear and to play along with each tune in the book.

Excellent idea. It would have been better if gradually, as the tunes progressed, the book weaned you off your dependence on the letters staring at you, so that a you could become literate in reading the actual notes. This doesn't happen and I think this is the major failing of this book. If you want to really become proficient in reading music along with learning the recorder, this is NOT the book for you. Both make learning fun and easy, and both are delightful. I love this book!

It helps me learn songs to play on my recorder! The best part is that the book teaches you notes so that you can fully understand the songs in the book! I also like that the songs are favorites, so that when I play the songs, people will recognize them!

Sincerely, Andrew Merle Sibila, age 9. This book has a lot of information, and it teaches a lot about reading music along with how to play the recorder, which I really like. Each lesson is broken down into a simple concept, and it takes care to build on each of the new concepts slowly and describe them clearly. My daughter and I are working through this book and we both really like it.

I would recommend this to anyone learning how to play, especially people who don't know anything about music. Good primer, and am making progress. The time notations for keeping the beat are written sometimes in a confusing fashion.

The instructions will state " count 8" but the notations to the bar sometimes do not correspond as the music becomes more complex. The description of the dreaded for beginners always a source of confusion dotted quarter note, doesn't quite jibe with a few of the pieces. Downloading the audio is easy and most helpful in hearing exactly what the phrases sound like and is necessary. Also, would have liked guidance as to when to play the low D as opposed high. Have to add now that it's almost a year later, I have figured it all out and in retrospect it is a fantastic book which, as another reviewer suggested, works best in tandem with Its Recorder Time.

This book is what I recommend to people who want to pick it back up again after years or decades away from it. It is less than 30 bucks and it sounds just as good as a wooden recorder costing many times more.

Make happy music and have a good time. One person found this helpful. See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. The book arrived promptly as I knew it would. The instructions are a little more difficult to follow than I imagined. I need to sit and have a proper go, rather than glance through the instructions.

I used to play the recorder quite well many years ago and thought it would be a lot easier to just to pick it up again - wrong! Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Very user friendly. Great beginner book. Excellent quality paper; easy to read font size and font style.

J onny Greenwood is looking well, all things considered. It was the culmination of his second life as a composer, a year career that has seen him write for the London Sinfonietta, work as composer-in-residence for BBC Concert Orchestra, collaborate with the Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki and create remarkable scores for the films of Lynne Ramsay and Paul Thomas Anderson. The focus is on 30 minutes of performance, and that focus lasts for nine months. Greenwood agrees. The idea for Octatonic, explains Greenwood, came after a late-night visit to Bleep , the hip online independent record shop.

Natasha Friend has written four YA novels, but, for some unknown reason, this was the first one that I've read. I must admit, it looks as though I've been missing out!

William Shakespeare. You would play upon me ; you would seem to know my stops ; you would pluck out the heart of my mystery ; you would sound me from my lowest note to the top of my compass : and there is much music, excellent voice, in this little organ ; yet cannot you make it speak. Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, you cannot play upon me. I pray you, in your letters, When you shall these unlucky deeds relate, Speak of me as I am ; nothing extenuate, Nor set down aught in malice : then must you speak Of one that lov'd not wisely but too well ; Of one not easily jealous, but, being wrought, Perplex'd in the extreme ; of one whose hand, Like the base Indian, threw a pearl away Richer than all his tribe Or keep it as a cistern for foul toads To knot and gender in!

Steps to Prep the Recorder

The recorder is a family of woodwind musical instruments in the group known as internal duct flutes — flutes with a whistle mouthpiece, also known as fipple flutes. A recorder can be distinguished from other duct flutes by the presence of a thumb-hole for the upper hand and seven finger-holes: three for the upper hand and four for the lower. It is the most prominent duct flute in the western classical tradition. Recorders are made in different sizes with names and compasses roughly corresponding to different vocal ranges. The sizes most commonly in use today are the soprano aka "descant", lowest note C 5 , alto aka "treble", lowest note F 4 , tenor lowest note C 4 and bass lowest note F 3.

It targets a slightly below the average ARS chapter's playing level but offers lots of interpretive and ornamentation possibilities. Times After Times by Steven A.

Beginning a Dynamic Recorder Program

Greetings colleagues! Keep in mind that the suggestions I will be offering spring from the general music program I had in which I saw grades twice a week for 40 minutes. Yes, I know it was a great schedule, even though I mostly pushed a cart or taught in the cafeteria. Brandon exemplifies a successful recorder program: kids who have quality instruments, know how to get a good sound and can articulate legato and staccato, can play a lot of notes, practice like crazy outside of school, know many songs by heart, can improvise, and experience printed notation after being able to sing and play.
